USB Scrolling LED Badge WHS Hack (Intro)

By: Alexander Kent|February 2, 20091 Comment

Recently I have gotten my hands on a “Windows Home Server Scrolling LED Badge“. It is a simple but neat high-tech name badge gadget: using blue LED’s, 8 messages up to 255 characters each with variable speed/scrolling modes as well as brightness control.

The badge has 3 tiny keys on its printed circuit board rear (on/off, select/enter) and is PC programmable via USB cable (after installing the software).
After playing with it for a couple of minutes, I thought it would be really cool to simply be able to plug it into my WHS and have it programmatically print out health notifications or other noteworthy events.

OK – this may not quite be as glamorous as any “DEFCON badge hacking” but I am certain it will be a fun project.

Stay tuned !

You should probably either link to an update or take this down.
