From the news released on Wednesday, it looks like one of the biggest computer hardware giants, Hewlett-Packard, is contemplating on jumping the Microsoft Windows ship for a new plan to develop their own operating system.

SAN FRANCISCO — Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday outlined a billion-dollar bet to reshape its huge personal-computer and mobile-device business to be more like Apple, using an in-house operating system rather than Microsoft Windows.
Here is the red flag, HP is Microsoft’s biggest customer and now that they will no longer require their services, how big of a hit will this be to Microsoft’s business.
For now Microsoft’s comment on the latest news was: “HP is a valued Microsoft partner, and we continue to work closely with them on many new products that bring great experiences to our mutual customers” but who knows if they are shacking in their boots — I, for one, am not convinced!

This is just so wrong, I don’t know where to begin. I don’t work for HP, but I know a little about them. To start with, HP has a massive enterprise business, where Windows is DEEPLY entrenched. HP will not, under any circumstance that I can possibly fathom, abandon their enterprise business. Neither will enterprises drop Windows. The sheer amount of development, support infrastructure, management infrastructure, and even user familiarity around Windows in enterprises will not disappear anytime soon. Hell, it’s been the year of the Linux desktop for the past 15 years in a row, look how well that’s gone. Even in the consumer space, people know Windows. Apple has made some gains, but they have a massive halo product in the iPhone/iPod/iTunes and yet still have not even come close to 10% marketshare worldwide. Hell this is more text than this story deserves already.
Long story short: the story is crap. HP ain’t dropping Windows. Maybe complementing it with webOS, but that’s it.
Come to think about it CNET hand a long list of major Microsoft executives leaving the company like rats from a sinking ship.
No way. Certainly not in the enterprise market.
April fools? Seriously not in the Enterprise market anytime soon but I can see how HP would like to be more like Apple and toss windows for webOS on all HP laptops, tablets and mobile devices.
I agree and of course not in the Enterprise market for the foreseeable future. Currently HP is investing wads of cash into their in-house operating system called webOS. Needless to say HP will probably equip millions of devices (smartphones, tablets and laptops) with webOS instead of Windows in the near future. Manufacturing everything in-house starting with the battery, chassis, internals and operating system is certainly an advantage with Apple and I believe that HP would be inclined to explore the same to “be more like Apple”.
That being said, we all know that in many areas it is super hard to ditch Windows.
“Manufacturing everything in-house starting with the battery, chassis, internals and operating system is certainly an advantage with Apple ”
Pretty sure that Apple manufactures almost nothing. It designs and subcontracts to companies like foxconn.
“HP will probably equip millions of devices (smartphones, tablets and laptops) with webOS instead of Windows ”
HP will be the last horse in a race that’s already almost done. Android and IOS are far ahead and I can’t see webOS catching up anytime soon. They’ll do a Nokia and join one of the frontrunners in a year or two.
Well, it seems it is already happening – HP just stopped selling all their Windows “small business” enterprise servers” in Canada – All Small HP Business Servers (Microserver, ProLiant Xeon servers) you can run Windows SBS 2008, Windows Server Foundation, Server 2011 (Colorado Family) are gone and sale listed as “discontinued”. You cannot buy them from HP, nor newegg.ca, not anywhere.
Last time something like that happened was HP MediaSmart WHS server. First, HP discontinued sale in Canada, then 2 months later also in US.
Compare search results for “HP server” on newegg.com US ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=hp+server&x=0&y=0 ) and in Canada : newegg.ca (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=hp+server&x=0&y=0 ).
Last month offering was the same. This month, all servers are bellow $3,000 are discontinued
as this HP ProLiant ML110 G : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859105604&cm_re=hp_server-_-59-105-604-_-Product
or this Microserver : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859105905&cm_re=hp_microserver-_-59-105-905-_-Product
What this is worth, indicates that HP is not only getting out of Microsoft Windows Home Server market, but also from Microsoft Windows Small Business Server (2008, 20011) market. If one learns from the past, HP cut Canada and world first, then, few months later US and kill the product entirely.
Remind me again how HP SCO turned out? This is probably just a publicity stunt to boost internal morale within HP and for consumers to overlook the slumping stock and sex scandals of the CEO. HP + MS + Intel are in a love triangle, even if HP doesn’t want to admit it.
can not see it happen
the house user is so used to Windows and work, School, Collage ect
When HP introduced the webOS TouchPad and its new lineup of smartphones, the company said it would be bringing webOS to the PC market. Now, the HP CEO is saying that all of its PCs in 2012 will ship with webOS
