Grid Junction 2.0 for WHS 2011 and SBS Essentials 2011 Discontinued

By: Alexander Kent|January 29, 201242 Comments

A big thank you to all our supporters and beta testers, unfortunately the project did not gain enough traction to warrant further development.

After careful consideration we have made the decision to suspend development of Grid Junction 2.0 for the foreseeable future. We have decided not to release the source code or any unfinished versions of Grid Junction 2.0. If you currently have Grid Junction 2.0 beta installed, please uninstall it at your earliest convenience.

This is the first I’ve heard of your product. I could have used and gladly paid for this add-in. Maybe try some social networking to get the word out. Hope you reconsider.

One of these add-ins that holded me from upgrading to WHS 2011. Once beta was released I made a switch and now ended without reasonable UPS software on my production platform. Any chance to let us keep this great piece of software as it is right now? It was working great in my configuration and never dissapointed. I am willing to donate, just to keep it on my WHS!

I am also extremely disappointed by this news. This addon worked perfectly for me in it’s current state. It also made a good replacement for the very grainy APC software I was using previously. I would echo the above comment, is there any chance we can continue to use this addon ‘as is’ since I am sure that I am not the only one that it works flawlessly for in it’s current state.

Wow, this is really, really disappointing. After My Movies and Lights Out, Grid Junction was the last major add-in from WHSv1 I was waiting to see brought over to WHS2011. I, too, would have paid for it.

That said, I’ve uninstalled the Beta, though it didn’t uninstall cleanly. After uninstalling (from within the dashboard) and rebooting, I’m getting constant alerts that the UPS Monitoring Service isn’t running. -.-

Well, there’s also the Advanced Admin Console 2011 AddIn ;)

Looks like the uninstallation left the health definitions on your server. Simply delete the folder “C:\Program Files\Windows Server\Bin\FeatureDefinitions\Kentdome.GridJunction.HealthAddIn” on your server to get rid of the false alerts.

Say it aint so! This is one of the necessary add-ins for the server. Please don’t judge “traction” by the number of beta testers signing up. I for one have been busy and was simply waiting for things to progress a bit further.

Given the apparent alternative of nothing I would gladly partake in beta testing and be willing to donate.

Bummer. I’ve used the add-on for a few years now and was looking forward to continuing to use it on 2011. My WHS alerted me last night that the service wasn’t running which was because the beta had expired. When I came to find the latest download this morning I found this post.

I’m starting to regret having invested in building my home infrastructure around 2011.

OK it seems I’m late to the game here–been wrapped up in other things the last couple of weeks and I’ve neglected all three of my favorite Home Server sites (HSL, HSS and MSS.net).

Anyhow, while I didn’t participate in the Grid Junction 2.0 beta, I am really disappointed to see it shelved. I’ve been so wrapped up in trying to get the next Home Server SMART 2012 beta out, with reasonably decent SSD support, that it’s been holding a lot of my attention.

I used Grid Junction with WHS v1, and found it very useful. I was looking forward to having it in WHS 2011. As a fellow developer and fellow geek, I sincerely hope this is a decision you will strongly reconsider.

I confess that it some days it seems like I don’t get a lot of “support” from users regarding Home Server SMART 2012. But when I see how many times HSS v1 has been downloaded (many thousands of times when Add-in Central was still up), the proof was in the pudding. When I offered betas, the response was lukewarm at best, but when the gold build was made available, people came.

There are 23 posts on this subject before me. I’d like to assume that all of them were beta testers, although that is a bit bold. Nevertheless, that’s a pretty good beta turnout. I don’t think I’ve gotten quite as many to beta test HSS 2012.

I guess it just seems it’s not fair to cancel the project or put it on indefinite hiatus on the basis of low beta tester turnout. A lot of folks shy away from betas and take the “let someone else try it out, and I’ll wait for the final product” approach. I’m willing to bet there were lots of folks waiting for Grid Junction 2.0 to go gold.

I am not one of them. I like to try the bleeding edge stuff. I’ve got an alpha build of Android (CyanogenMod 9 ICS) on my HP TouchPad–an alpha build!

So from one developer to another, please reconsider this decision.

I’ve been looking forward to Grid Junction coming out for WHS2011, checking it’s status ever couple of months.

I was donig some updates on my server today, and googled it to check the current development status. Was very disappointed to see that it’s been discontinued. Like the other posters, I’d be happy to make a small donation to continue development!

I’ll add my voice to the growing pile. I WAS beta-testing Grid Junction V2; I had come to depend on it for reliable shutdowns when we were hit by our not-infrequent winter power outages. The beta worked without flaw. I would have been MORE than happy to pay for the final product. The discontinuation of this project has left me with no dependable way to protect against data corruption or loss if I’m not home and the power fails for any length of time.

A lot of folks here are more than willing to pony up some cash for a good project – please don’t leave us out in the cold.

      Regards,
      -Ron

I would have participated in the Beta version but I was not aware there was a Beta version! I think the publicity was missing on this Beta version and it’s only been out for a little more than 2 months. I stopped checking if a version for WHS 2011 was coming because it was announced early last year but it wasn’t coming. I had lost hope. And now that I could have tried the Beta version the project is discontinued. I used Grid Junction on WHS v1 and was eagerly waiting for a version for v2.

It is really sad that this product is discontinued and like many others I hope you will reconsider. This add-in is really useful and I would certainly pay to have it.

OK, so we have quite a few response from community over past month and no response from developer. Many of us willing to donate/pay for what we received for now as beta. Would be nice to get some perspective from Alexander too… Either definite NO or promising MAYBE… Or this thread is just for us to express our sad feelings about such loss and no one, beside abandoned users is reading it…

I don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouths, but I’ve spoken (via email) with Alexander as well as Alex Kuretz over at MediaSmartServer.net on a more general level. We’re all developers of add-ins for WHS – Alexander and GJ; Alex and Remote Notification and me and Home Server SMART.

What I believe all three of us agree on is that there is very little “fire” or enthusiasm behind WHS 2011 or its business partners SBS 2011 Essentials and Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. Rewind to November 22, 2010, the day before Microsoft announced Drive Extender was history. The community was alive and abuzz, salivating over the next beta of WHS Vail. Then November 23 hit, with Michael Leworthy’s note that DE was done, dead, kaput. Outrage erupted throughout the WHS community…here, on MSS.net, Home Server Show, We Got Served, Facebook, you name it. Then HP bowed out of the home server market. And Microsoft wouldn’t listen and forged on ahead.

Many folks made it clear. They were going to stick it out with WHS v1 as long as they could, or find an alternate solution such as Drobo. Some of us found solace in tools like Drive Bender or StableBit DrivePool, I myself being a Drive Bender user.

WHS 2011 has been fraught with issues since being released. Just check out the forums and find out how many people can’t get the connector to install…it gets to 99% then backs out with a message that there was an error, leaving frustrated users to figure out on their own what went wrong. It’s all over the Microsoft WHS forums, as well as the aforementioned home server sites. Whereas WHS v1 just worked flawlessly almost 100% of the time, WHS 2011 needs a lot of hand holding. And the latest Update Rollup seems to have broken more than it fixed. Alas, many users jumped ship and went back to WHS v1.

For me, Home Server SMART is a hobby, and I’m continuing to march on with it—as a hobby. If Alexander and Alex work on these tools as a source of income, then it can make it very difficult to continue investing many hours of time and effort, and maybe even money, into something that will wind up with nothing more than a niche following. If I depended on HSS for income, I’d probably put a lot more time and effort into enhancing the HSS version for WHS v1, because that’s where the majority of the users still are.

I’d still like to see a WHS 2011 version of Grid Junction (and Remote Notification as well). But at the same time, I think we need to look at the landscape through developers’ glasses and ask that burning question, “Is it worth it?”

  • Mirek March 6, 2012

Well, you made few valid points, but; DE is not what we look at. These people who posted here are on WHS 2011 despite DE being missing, means they want to use and they want GJ version tailored for WHS 2011. More over, for many of us (like me), current beta version was working perfectly well. Why the waste so many already spent hours of successful development? Just recompile with time limit removed and have some past users happy!

Quoted again to underline the way most of us are feeling:

‘Just recompile with time limit removed and have some past users happy!’

I don’t understand why the developer cannot simply release the product as is, it was working perfectly well.

I would agree with most of the posters, this was working well for me. I would have paid for the final release. The points made by Matthew Sawyer is valid, time is worth more than any thing else these days. It just sucks Microsoft released such a DOA product that no one wants to get behind. Thanks again MS!

I would agree as well with at least dumping the time limit on the beta and just the beta version be downloaded there is more then a few programs that never get past a beta release that work great the makers of those programs typically just abandon the project for what ever the reason be it not enough followers can’t figure out a problem and give up or just plain lose interest

one example is tv4homeserver still in beta release never seen a final vrsion of it

it was just plain cruel to release a beta version of GJ and then pull the plug on it and kill it with the timer

the Least Alex could do it strip the timer from it and let peole download it with the disclaimer that no further work will be done on it and if works great if it don’t then sorry use at own risk

  • Mirek March 26, 2012

Just one more thougth… Seeing so many positive comments about beta version working fine for people means to me it was pretty close to release. And fact that author did not receive enough feedback is just reflection of alraeady very mature version that was available to public. Personally I used it for months and have nothing to report… In my config everythin was just pefect… sadly to future of GJ :-(

  • Phil March 30, 2012

It would be nice if the developer could at least give us some response to the many comments already posted here, an action which would take no more than 2 minutes of time. Perhaps this silence suggests that there is another reason for the plug suddenly being pulled than what has been publically stated. Customer PR goes a long way, and it would not take long to reply to the many loyal customers that have commented here or arwe watching this thread.

Ok so we know that you previously said that 2.0 was 95% complete (the beta test was taking longer than expected) and maybe you have a reason for canceling development that you would prefer not to share, I/we can respect that; but there doesn’t seem to be any comparable alternative to your product. I and others are willing to pay or donate for this add-in, considering the work you have put in so far it may be worth the additional effort for the potential monetary gain, not finishing is guaranteed to produce no monetary gain… But you know this already and have your reasons for canceling the product. Perhaps you would consider giving/trading the source code to a fellow WHS programmer there are only a handful of independent and ‘successful’ writers for WHS perhaps you could contact one and work out a mutually beneficial deal.

I’m upgrading to WHS2011 this weekend (the key for me was the ability to backup the server OS disk, unlike WHSv1, as I had a nasty crash a few weeks ago) and am disappointed to see that GJ for WHS2011 is dead. As a programmer myself, I can understand that if it isn’t profitable, the project can’t always continue, however if he is truly abandoning it, why not release the source code and let someone else finish the work? If there are plans to maybe finish it in the future, let us know! Just don’t leave us hanging in the middle.
