I connected my APC Back-UPS RS1200 to my server, and it was recognized. I installed Grid Junction, and it saw my UPS. After cycling power, however, Grid Junction does not detect my UPS. What should I do?
Did you install the APC powerchute software? If so please uninstall it? If not please provide more information about your setup for example your hardware and WHS OS is it retail or OEM?
Please note that current verison of Grid Junction does not support Serial connection, and it will be impossible to support all UPS all over the world. USB is the key and as Dirk has said you must not have the UPS brand software running.

I uninstalled APC PowerChute and rebooted my computer and my MediaSmart server. The problem persists.
The connection is USB. Note that Grid Junction detected my UPS once.
Try and re-install Grid Junction?
I'll uninstall it permanently first.
Do you have cleaned up also the windows registry? Sometimes the *.dll's are not deleted. This is a problem with windows software writing. You can use the trail version from TuneUp http://www.tune-up.com. Run the RegistryCleaner. Sometimes he needs to run more then ones, but the program tell you that. Then you can be shure that no rest's from your previous installation of APC PowerChute can be found. I know the software. A friend from me has done the same mistake. After he has used TuneUp the registry was cleaned.
Way of working:
Test this one time. That procedure has helped more then once. TuneUp is one of the best tools for those actions, i think.
byronsnake: I'll uninstall it permanently first.
I am sorry to read such a counter-productive response. Everyone on this thread has been trying to help you and quite frankly I don't think anyone cares if you use Grid Junction or not.
It is your WHS, your data and given that there are problems with the built-in power management and APC software not being designed for WHS usage I am pretty sure I know what is going on. Anyways my final suggestion to you would be to ensure you back-up your data and do a system recovery because from experience I believe your WHS is corrupt.I would encourage you to take a look at the "Support Tips" we have published; to try and help make some of these support/help/request situations less frustrating. At the end of the day we will be happy to help, so feel free to give it another try if you are willing to work with us.
Microsoft MVP - Windows Home Server
I'll consider it. I've had a registry cleaner that trashed my computer.
Hello again,I appreciate that you are hanging in there, now before you do anything - please let us know your:
a) Your Windows Home Server hardware (HP, Acer, or homebuilt)
b) Your Windows Home Server OS software (OEM, Retail, hacked OS?)
For example there are known issues with the WHS X:\Files Edition... knowning about A and B will help a lot and we can take it from there.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful for the all the assistance I've received, and I'm impressed with the speed of the responses. I'm aware of the limits of my Dell Latitude D820 (I should have bought an HP) just as I'm aware of the brilliant engineering of my MediaSmart server. There are trade-offs I'm considering. PowerChute is easy to install and always works when installed on my Dell. In addition, it reports brownouts, battery condition, and allows me to test the battery. Mike suggested a registry cleaner, but I've had a registry cleaner trash my Dell. I'm merely considering costs and benefits and deciding a course of action that will allow me to get the best out of my equipment without doing damage or taking so much time as to be counter-productive.
Since you say you are pretty certain why Grid Junction isn't detecting my UPS, what do you think is the reason?
Thanks again for the support I've received from everybody.
I have a Hewlett-Packard EX-475 MediaSmart server running Windows Home Server with Power Pack 2. Version information follows:
Windows Home Server Console: 6.0.2030.0Windows Home Server Backup & Restore: 6.0.2030.0Windows Home Server Drive Extender: 6.0.2030.0Windows Home Server Remote Access: 6.0.2030.0Windows Home Server Storage Manager: 6.0.2030.0
Registry cleaners can be a hit or miss but let us focus on the nuts and bolts of the problem and first ensure we are on the same page:
1) You have the HP MediaSmart Server EX475 with SP2 to which you connected your APC RS 1200 and you installed APC Powerchute and then sometime after: Grid Junction on your HP EX475- correct?
2) Your desktop/laptop is a DELL D820 running Windows XP or Windows Vista and you installed APC Powerchute software which worked great on your Windows OS - correct? Now to first answer your question the Powerchute software comes in different flavors the business/server edition is actually not that bad the "personal edition" is terrible. I suspect some DLL files were left behind - seen that many times that the a newer battery driver takes over/left behind. My hunch is that you first had the APC software installed on your WHS and at some point tried to use Grid Junction? Please remote desktop into your HP EX475, what I would like you to do for us is to quickly take a look at the Grid Junction registry location. For this to be of any use, Grid Junction needs to be installed and your RS 1200 APC UPS connected to your HP EX475.Don't worry - this is a passive action! You do want to be very careful when looking at your registry but if you could go to Start -> Run and use "regedit" (without the quotes) proceed to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GridJunction
Please take a screenshot and post it.
Next, take a look under device manager on your WHS, what does it say under battery?
1) Correct except I did not install PowerChute on my MediaSmart server, only on the Dell. PowerChute has never been installed on the server.
2) The Dell D820 is running Windows XP SP3. I installed PowerChute Personal Edition on the Dell, and it worked, maintaining communication with the AC UPS at all times. I have subsequently uninstalled PowerChute from the Dell.
This information should change my next actions from what you recommended. Please confirm.
