    Remote Alert 1.1. Test Cases

Test case 1: - Enabling Remote Access Scheduling
Enable a remote access availability schedule in the Remote Access Schedule settings area. For example if your current local time is 2:30PM you may set it to 2:35PM with a duration of 1hour (at your discretion) for testing purposes -Verify that the "Remote Access Disabled" HTML page is displayed during set duration and that it successfully resumes/allowing remote access connection per your defined schedule.

Test case 2: - Brute Force Protection Test #1

First ensure that Brute force protection is enabled under Remote Access Settings configuration and that Remote Access is enabled with no active scheduling policy in effect. Proceed to your Windows Home Server remote access logon i.e. http://hpserver/Remote/logon.aspx and purposely enter numerous bad credentials. Verify that brute force protection displays "Remote Access Disabled" and successfully resumes logon operation after a 30minute timeout.

Test case 3: - Brute Force Protection Test #2
Repeat Brute Force Protection Test #1 while another user is remotely connected, ensure that the good user session does not get locked-out during any brute force protection engagements.

    Notes:
Enabling and disabling any schedules take about 1min to propagate - this behavior is per design.
Installing Remote Alert causes certain system files to be modified -  original version backups are automatically made during installation. A rollback to these original files will be made upon Remote Alert removal via installer.

  • Here are the results of my testing:

Test case 1 and 2 worked as it should.

Test case 3 would not allow the good user session to keep active it also
went to Remote Access Disabled. When did this test I signed in as a
user and then opened another Firefox tab and did the brute force attack
until the second tab was disabled. I then went to the first tab and
when I tried to click on the Computers it came up as Remote Access Disabled.
  • Thank you for your feedback on this, we are looking further into this and hope to get this sorted with the next beta release.

Would be great if you could then re-check/verify that indeed it is working :)

  • Looks great, I like the added security features.  When I clicked on the Download Blacklists link in the IP Security tab, it took me to your Kentdome.com site.  However, since I did not see any blacklists to downloaded, I am assuming you have more work to do on this feature.  I will continue testing when I have more time and provide feedback.  Thanks.

  • Thanks Jeff, yes there are couple more things we need to fix with the current Remote Alert 1.1 private beta version and yes- originally I had hoped to be able to release some readymade blacklists like "China", "Russia", "Europe" etc with this current 1.1 beta version. Unfortunately we got caught up in other matters and it might be another week or so until we get to it.

Are you looking to blacklist anything in particular?

Microsoft MVP - Windows Home Server

  • I understand, so much you want to do and never enough time.  No, I am not looking to blacklist anything in particular.  That feature caught my eye, so I wanted to check it out.  I will be happy to start with the readymade blacklists and go from there.

  • Thanks Alexander, just loaded it on to my server, so far I think that it is great with lovely new features that would go well with way I run my server.  Will of course post any problems or bugs that I encounter. :)

  • I would like to help in the beta test if possiable.

    Thanks

  • Me too please!

  • Both Test case 1: - Enabling Remote Access Scheduling and Test case 2: - Brute Force Protection Test #1 is working on my server.  I have yet to do Test case 3: - Brute Force Protection Test #3. I will try to do that test case later on today (Wednesday).

    Suggestion:-

To have the option to turn off the  "Remote Alert Warning, Unauthorized access ....", the reason why I suggest this is that some people may see that a for the fun of it try it on to see if they get into trouble.
