Microsoft MVP - Windows Home Server
Alexander
I installed Vista Caller-ID on a Dell XPS 420 running Vista (32 bit) OS with a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem. Initially having some problems, I installed Hyper Terminal Private Edition and after some trial and error found the command set that turned on the CID. I never did see the keyboard typing on screen only the modem response to the keyboard command. As far as I can identify all Fax and scanner services are turned off on this system. The desk phone installed downstream of the modem is displaying the CID name and number information as an indication that it is passing through the modem. After several combinations of configurations, include or exclude Outlook contacts list etc. the pop-up has not worked, there is not a single entry in the history log file.
Any suggestions on what to try next? If there is a upgrade due out in the near future it may well provide a software solution, however, I understand from some other on-line comments that Dell's use of the Conexant D850 modem may itself be a partial contributer to the problem in that it is suspected as being somewhat less than 100% voice capable (in some folks opinion). This might explain the lack of the keyboard commands showing up on screen during the Hyper Terminal Private Edition sessions.
Thanks for your time and effort in what looks like a great product.
Bob
Hi Bob,Thank you for your posting.
Yes, we expect to be releasing Vista Caller-ID 1.0.8 towards the end of this week using newer telephony code and more robust diagnostics as well as 64-bit compatibility.I have the Conexant D850 on the supported list: http://www.homeserverland.com/wikis/vista_caller-id_wiki/telephony-supported-devices-list.aspxDid you set your area code under control panel -> phone and modem options? Can you post the hyperterminal test session output or better the modem log and Vista Caller-ID diagnostics file? That would be great and that will help a lot :)
Reminds me HyperTerminal is no longer free, I need to get around to update the wiki to use PuTTY instead.
HI Alexander,
I did see Conexant D850 on the supported list, but have come across some less than positive comments in other postings. Yes I have the area code set in the options for the modem.
One other item, I have downloaded and installed all of the updated utilities, drivers, applications etc. for the modem from the Dell website.
Below is the modem log script:
OK
NO CARRIER
RING
DATE = 0202TIME = 1137NMBR = 25382045xxNAME = TACOMA,WA
Note at the top of this script all of my keyboard entires are missing including the AT+VCID=1 command, but I get the OK returned just prior to the first RING.
There are no entries in the Vista Caller-ID History file. I was unable to locate anything resembling a Vista Caller-ID diagnostics file under the \Program Files\Kentdome\Vista Caller-ID
Hope this helps.
I tried to run Vista-Caller ID on a WinXP machine (with Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem). So far I couldn't make it run: no Popup-screen, no call in history.
I used Hyperterminal Test as you described. This showed the Phone number and Name - so far provided by the PBX.
Even after using the Caller-ID repair utility Vista-Caller ID would not work (used Version 1.0.7 and 1.0.7-april 15 fix).

@Bob - as mentioned we will have new code out towards the end of the week, would be great if you could give it a try then... meanwhile please do post the Vista Caller-ID diagnostics file located under your documents\callerid directory@Gilbert is this a 64bit machine?

Thanks for the question.
No, its a 32bit machine.
I am having an issue with my Vista Caller-ID client writing to the WHS. The share is available and it does show up under the configure tab as found with the correct path. The account has full access to the share.

The client is Windows XP if that has any bearing on this function working correctly.
The path is configured as : \\SERVER\Public\CallerID\
I can browse to this location and create folders in there but at this moment, it is empty.
Thank you for reporting this; I am not sure if this is a bug or specific to Windows XP - I will go ahead and create a Virtual XP Machine (are you using XP Home Edition or Professional?) and further explore and try to re-create.
it's Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 installed.
So I decided to take a peek in the "Vista Caller-ID.exe.config" file and this may lead to the problem:
<setting name="WHSAddIn" serializeAs="String">
<value>False</value>
</setting>
<setting name="IsWHSConfigured" serializeAs="String">
<setting name="WHSShare" serializeAs="String">
<value />
When I go to the application via the systray icon and bring up the interface, it does say "Windows Home Server Found!" and it does have the location I mentioned in the previous message. Should it be reflected in this config file as well or is it reading it from another location? I couldn't find any registry entries related to the Vista Caller-ID application. Are the active settings stored in another location?
I just downloaded Windows XP Professional with SP3 from Technet, installing now, bit of a busy day but will try and use that opportunity to further improve XP legacy support.Meanwhile, No! what you are looking at is the machine default application configuration file. In reality, Vista Caller-ID has "per-user" settings configuration information which can be found at the following location:In Windows Vista:C:\Users\Alexander\AppData\Local\Kentdome_Technologies\Vista_Caller-ID.exe_Url_qdlqotqusbsvxa0je3qa5lg5jvzbuomq\1.0.7.0In Windows XP (guessing):c:\Documents and Settings\Alexander\Application Data\Kentdome_Technologies\Vista_Caller-ID.exe_Url_qdlqotqusbsvxa0je3qa5lg5jvzbuomq\1.0.7.0
Please take a look at these locations, would be interested to learn what you have stored in your user.config, the BOLD will be different on your system.
Thanks for the speedy response! Here is where the file is located on Windows XP:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Kentdome_Technologies\Vista_Caller-ID.exe_Url_1aciimdgrl1tkejoeopeazgj0kbjdu3n\1.0.7.0

Hi,
I've just installed Vista Caller ID on my PC. No problem during the installation but I can't see the picture of people who call.
When I try to synchronize with outlook I got the message " Message Class unknown". ??? Isn't it compatible with Microsoft Outlook 2007 ?
Is there a patch to correct this ?
Thank you.
