CONFIGURE LINKSYS WRT54G2 ROUTER FOR WINDOWS HOME SERVER REMOTE ACCESS

The Linksys by Cisco Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G2 does not support the Windows Home Server automatic router configuration over UPnP standards. You must manually configure Port Forwarding to your Windows Home Server.

Manufacturer: Linksys
Model: WRT54G2
Firmware 1.5.00 build 019, May 5 2009

Overview

  1. Log on to your router’s setup page
  2. Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)
  3. Assign a static IP address to your Windows Home Server
  4. Configure Port Forwarding to your Windows Home Server

STEP 1 - Log on to your router’s setup page

Open your web browser and enter your router’s URL http://192.168.1.1
The Enter Network Password window will appear. Skip user name and type the router's password ("admin" is the default password) as the password, and click the "OK" button. If you have changed the defaults, then enter your corresponding information.

STEP 2 - Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)

Click on the “Administration” page and proceed to the “Management” tab. Ensure that the UPnP Enable option is selected and press “Save Settings”.

STEP 3 - Assign a static IP address to your Windows Home Server

The Linksys by Cisco Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G2 does not support DHCP address reservation. You must configure your Windows Home Server to use a static IP address before proceeding to the next step.

STEP 4 - Configure port forwarding to your Windows Home Server

a) Click on "Applications & Gaming" and proceed to the "Port Range Forward" section.

b) You need to enable forwarding for 3 different ports: HTTP (80) , HTTPS (443) , RWW (4125).  Each of these will need its own row on the table.  For all of these, the "IP Address" should be the static IP address you gave to the Windows Home Server in step 3.

  • Enable HTTP forwarding:
    Application: HTTP
    Start: 80
    End: 80
    Protocol: TCP
    IP Address: 192.168.1.10
    Enable: Yes
  • Configure HTTPS forwarding:
    Application: HTTPS
    Start: 443
    End: 443
    Protocol: TCP
    IP Address: 192.168.1.10
    Enable: Yes
  • Configure RWW forwarding:
    Application: HTTP
    Start: 4125
    End: 4125
    Protocol: TCP
    IP Address: 192.168.1.10
    Enable: Yes

c) Click the "Save Settings" button.

NOTES

The Linksys WRT54G2 router allows you to set the reconnection mode when using PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) connection. DSL providers typically use this option. This method of connection requires you to enter a Username and Password (provided by your Internet Service Provider) to gain access to the Internet.

When using PPPoE you must ensure that the Reconnect Mode is set to: “Always On”.

All done! After you configured your Linksys by Cisco Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G2 for Remote Access you should test the remote connectivity from within your home and from outside of your home.
