The Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool is an easy to use tool for checking if your broadband router supports certain technologies. You can use this tool to check if your broadband router supports the Windows Home Server automatic router configuration.

Note: Do not run these tests directly on your Windows Home Server. Instead you should perform the tests using any computer running Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP. Your computer should be connected directly to your broadband router and you must use Internet Explorer

STEP 1 - INTERNET CONNECTIVITY EVALUATION TOOL WEBSITE

Using Internet Explorer visit: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/tools/igd
(You must use Internet Explorer 6 or later because the tool requires ActiveX) Carefully read and accept the Microsoft Software License Terms and and click on "Continue".

STEP 2 - INSTALL THE ACTIVEX ADD-ON

When prompted click on the top information bar and click on "Install This Add-on for All Users on This Computer..." to install the IDTool ActiveX add-on.

STEP 3 - START THE TEST

Click the "Start Test" button and be prepared to wait a couple of minutes. The tests can require up to 10 minutes to complete and do not make any permanent changes to your router.

STEP 4 - TEST RESULTS

The tool will conduct the following tests on your broadband router:

  1. Basic Internet Connectivity test
  2. Network Address Translator Type
  3. Traffic Congestion test
  4. TCP High Performance test
  5. UPnP Support test
  6. Multiple Simultaneous Connection States test

Windows Home Server Remote Access Compatibility Check

The UPnP Support Test (Test #5) will determine if your router supports the necessary technologies to automatically configure your broadband router for Windows Home Server Remote Access.
If your router does not support UPnP you must configure static port forwarding for Windows Home Server Remote Access to work
