CONFIGURE D-LINK DIR-655 ROUTER FOR WINDOWS HOME SERVER REMOTE ACCESS

The D-Link DIR-655 Wireless N Router does support the Windows Home Server automatic router configuration over UPnP standards. However, for best results we recommend to manually configure Port Forwarding to your Windows Home Server.

Manufacturer: D-Link
Model: DIR-655
Firmware Version: V1.21
Hardware Version: A4

OVERVIEW:

  1. Log on to your router's setup page
  2. Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)
  3. Create IP Address reservation for your Windows Home Server
  4. Configure port forwarding to your Windows Home Server

STEP 1 - Log on to your router's setup page

Open your web browser and enter your router's URL.  By default, this is "http://192.168.0.1". Most D-Link devices use the 192.168.0.x range. If you have configured the login information, log in with your username and password.  If not, the default username is "admin" and password is "password".

STEP 2 - Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)

Click on the “Advanced” page and proceed to the “Advanced Network” tab. Ensure the “Enable UPnP” option is checked and press “Save Settings”.

STEP 3 - Create IP Address reservation for your Windows Home Server

a) Click on the “Setup” page and proceed to the “Network Settings" tab. Find your Windows Home Server under the “Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients” section and click on “Reserve”.

b) The “Add DHCP Reservation” section will pre-populate with the current IP Address and your Windows Home Server MAC Address. Make a note of the specified IP Address information and click the “Save” button.

c) Verify that your Windows Home Server is listed in the DHCP Reservations List

STEP 4 - Configure port forwarding to your Windows Home Server

a) Click on the “Advanced” page and proceed to the “Port Forwarding” tab.
You need to enable forwarding for 3 different ports: HTTP (80), HTTPS (443), RWW (4125).  Each of these will need its own row on the table.  Some of them may already have rows and may/may not be enabled.  If there aren't enough empty row, re-use a row for a protocol that you aren't going to forward.  For all of these, the "IP Address" should be the IP address you gave to the Windows Home Server in step 3.

  • Enable HTTP forwarding
    Name: HTTP
    IP Address: 192.168.0.198
    TCP: 80
    Schedule: Always
    Inbound Filter: Allow All
  • Configure HTTPS forwarding:
    Name: HTTPS
    IP Address: 192.168.0.198
    TCP: 443
    Schedule: Always
    Inbound Filter: Allow All
  • Configure RWW forwarding:
    Name: RWW
    IP Address: 192.168.0.198
    TCP: 4125
    Schedule: Always
    Inbound Filter: Allow All

b) Click the "Save Settings" button.

NOTES

The D-Link router allows you to set the reconnection mode when using PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) connection. DSL providers typically use this option. This method of connection requires you to enter a Username and Password (provided by your Internet Service Provider) to gain access to the Internet.

When using PPPoE you must ensure that the Reconnect Mode is set to: “Always On”.

All done! After you configured your D-Link DIR-655 Wireless N Router for Remote Access you should test the remote connectivity from within your home and from outside of your home.
