CONFIGURE NETGEAR WNR3500 ROUTER FOR WINDOWS HOME SERVER REMOTE ACCESS

The Netgear WNR3500 RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router supports the Windows Home Server automatic router configuration over UPnP standards. However, for best results we recommend to manually configure Port Forwarding to your Windows Home Server.

Overview

  1. Log on to your router’s setup page
  2. Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)
  3. Create IP Address reservation for your Windows Home Server
  4. Configure Port Forwarding to your Windows Home Server

STEP 1 - Log on to your router’s setup page

Open your web browser and enter your router’s URL

http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1

For Netgear routers -by default the username is admin, and the password is password. If you have changed the defaults, then enter your corresponding information.

If you have forgotten your router password, you may reset the router by pressing and holding for a few seconds the reset button located on the router itself.

STEP 2 - Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)

In the left-hand column click on the UPnP option and ensure “Turn UPnP On” is enabled.

STEP 3 - Create IP Address reservation for your Windows Home Server

a) In the left-hand column click on the “Attached Devices”, locate your Windows Home Server name under “Device Name” and take note of your Windows Home Server’s MAC Address.

b) In the left-hand column click on “LAN Setup” , enable the “Use Router as DHCP Server” option and under “Address Reservation” click on “Add

Select your Windows Home Server from the available “Address Reservation Table” and make a note of the IP address (for example 192.168.1.3) and click “Add

Verify that your Windows Home Server has been added under “Address Reservation” and press “Apply”.

STEP 4 - Configure Port Forwarding

The Windows Home Server remote access feature requires you to forward port 80, port 443 and port 4125.

a)  In the left-hand navigation column of your routers setup interface, click on “Port Forwarding / Port Triggering” and then click on “Add Custom Service”.

b) Enter the following port forward information:

Service Name: HTTP
Service Type: TCP/UDP
Starting Port: 80
Ending Port: 80
Server IP Address: 192.168.1.3 (this is your Windows Home Server reserved IP address as specified above)

Click “APPLY

c) Click on “Add Custom Service” and enter the following:

Service Name: HTTPS
Service Type: TCP/UDP
Starting Port: 443
Ending Port: 443
Server IP Address: 192.168.1.3 (this is your Windows Home Server reserved IP address as specified above)

Click "Apply"

Click “Apply” to return to the "Port Forwarding / Port Triggering" overview page.

The resulting Port Forwarding table should look as illustrated below. Note that the Server IP Address represents your Windows Home Server IP address and may differ from 192.168.1.3.

All done! After you configured your Netgear WNR3500 Router for Remote Access you should test the remote connectivity from within your home and from outside of your home.
